Karratha is located 1,500 km north of Perth on the North West Coastal Highway. Karratha is a modern and well serviced town situated right in the heart of “The Central Pilbara Coast” and has some of the world’s richest mineral deposits and spectacular scenery in the world renowned Karijini National Park.

In comparison to the 2001 census, the population within the radio licence area of Karratha has decreased by 18.77% to 16,408. Over 37% of the population is aged less than 25 years. The birthplace for 88% of the population was Oceania including Australian, New Zealander, Indigenous and Islander persons.

Like many mining towns, Karratha has a young population. Over 54% of the families (3,781) in the area have children. Of the 3,141 people attending an educational institution, 53% were either in infants or primary, 28% were attending a secondary educational institution, 11% attending TAFE and 8% attending University or another tertiary institution. Of the 4,875 people who already have a tertiary qualification, 23% have a degree and 77% have a certificate, diploma or another tertiary qualification.

Of the total dwellings (4,683) in Karratha, 12% of dwellings are owned outright and 23% are mortgaged. Private rental properties represent 13% of total dwellings. Given the high wages of many of the miners in the area, Karratha is a very prosperous city; 12% of the total households (4,142) have a household.
